Doug Botnick, Baritone
Biography

A prizewinner of the prestigious 2013 XIII Altamura / Enrico Caruso International Voice Competition in New York and the San Francisco Opera National Auditions, Doug Botnick is acclaimed for his powerful sonorous tone and elegant, stylish delivery of words and music. He portrayed Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. With the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Doug was Emile de Becque in South Pacific (cover). He has also been heard as Sweeney Todd, Tony in The Most Happy Fella, Albin in La Cage Aux Folles, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Max in Sunset Boulevard, and Javert in Les Misérable, among others.

In opera houses across the United States, Doug’s operatic portrayals have included the title roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Macbeth and Nabucco, as well as Germont in La Traviata, Count Di Luna in
Il Trovatore, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera and Iago in Otello; Puccini’s Scarpia in Tosca, Michele in Il Tabarro, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Marcello in La Boheme and Rance in La Fancilla del West; Mozart’s Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Papageno in The Magic Flute, as well as Rossini’s Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Leoncavallo’s Tonio in I Pagliacci and Mascagni’s Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana.

Some recent engagements include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Angeles Chorale, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera at Wichita Grand Opera and Opera San Luis Obispo, Amonasro in Aida at West Bay Opera, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana at the International Opera Institute in Palm Springs, Germont in La Traviata at Repertory Opera Company in Los Angeles. Doug sang Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. With the Monterey Symphony Orchestra he sang Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. LA Opera chose Doug as Amonasro in Aida where he sang two weeks of staging rehearsals and covered that role.

Doug’s concert repertoire includes songs by Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Jerry Herman, Frank Loesser, Alfred Newman, Cole Porter, Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and John Williams, among others, as well as large scale works for orchestra and chorus and recital works for voice and piano by John Adams, Bach, Beethoven, Alban Berg, Ernest Bloch, Brahms, Handel, Ibert, Korngold, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Messiaen, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schubert, Schumann, Schönberg, R. Strauss, Stravinsky, Tosti and Vaughan Williams, among others.

Doug was a prizewinner in the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition and a member of the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program and was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In addition, he was an Apprentice Artist with Santa Fe Opera and was a member of the Los Angeles and San Francisco Civic Light Opera’s Musical Theatre Workshop.
